OBC Letter regarding Bill 229, the Working for Workers Six Act, 2024
On January 13, 2025, the Ontario Business Coalition (OBC) addressed Hon. David Piccini, Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training, and Skills Development, regarding their concerns about the provisions outlined in Bill 229, the Working for Workers Six Act, 2024, specifically Schedule 6. The OBC expressed strong objections to the proposed requirement for surplus distribution from the WSIB Insurance Fund to Schedule 2 municipal employers related to primary-site colorectal claims. Such surplus distribution undermines the foundational principles of Ontario’s compensation system, which clearly differentiate between Schedule 1 and Schedule 2 employers.
The OBC was established to advocate for a sustainable workplace compensation system in Ontario that meets the needs of both employers and workers while enhancing the province’s competitiveness. The coalition collaborates with senior officials at the WSIB and within government to ensure that Ontario’s workplace compensation framework effectively serves employers and fairly compensates injured workers. The OBC boasts a diverse membership, comprising organizations focused on workplace compensation issues, including representatives from the manufacturing, auto assembly, construction, fuels, and temporary staffing services sectors, as well as Schedule 2 employers.
