In a News Release issued on April 13th, the provincial government announced that it intends to introduce legislation to amend the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act (WSIA) which if passed will:

  • Increase loss of earnings benefits from 85% of net pre-injury earnings to 90%
  • ensure workers continue to receive supports if they are planning to work past the age of 65

The Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) provides income replacement insurance for workers who become injured or sick due to workplace causes. COCA believes that workers who become sick and injured on the job must be made financially whole during their recoveries. They should be neither better off nor worse off financially while they recover. That’s why our longstanding recommendation to government has been to engage an independent research organization to conduct a benefits adequacy study to determine if benefits currently provided by the WSIB on an after-tax basis are adequate or if there are under compensations or overcompensations.

The news release was short on detail so we will wait to see the Bill.
